Ska Brewing Welcomes Autumn With Euphoria Cans

“Euphoria comes in perfect time for the Broncos season. We’re officially ready for football now.”

IMG_6280.JPG

DURANGO, CO— Ska Brewing’s seasonal Euphoria Pale Ale returns to the brewery’s World Headquarters this Thursday during Ska-BQ, and hits shelves in thirteen states next week. This highly anticipated beer release serves as Durango’s unofficial kickoff into winter.

Euphoria’s big malt backbone meets caramel sweetness and just a touch of chocolate, with epic grapefruit hop aroma and flavor provided by a huge dry hop addition that all comes together to make it a perfect beer for those long lift rides.

Both known as craft creators in their respective industries, Ska Brewing and Venture Snowboards began a partnership about 15 years ago. “Ska takes the same approach in crafting their beer, and we're both based in the San Juan Mountains, so teaming up seemed like a natural. Euphoria is named after Venture’s powder board - you get the same heady feeling drinking it as you do floating through the deep stuff on a blower powder day,” explains Lisa Branner from Venture.

“Euphoria comes in perfect time for the Broncos season,” says Ska Brewing’s Sales and Marketing Director Kristen Muraro. “We’re officially ready for football now.”

Celebrate the upcoming season with Ska Brewing this Thursday, September 12 at Ska-BQ the brewery’s World Headquarters at 5pm. Ska and Venture Snowboards will debut this year’s custom ska-themed snowboard and host a Euphoria celebration in November— more information will soon be available about this event at skabrewing.com.

Find Euphoria in 6-packs in all thirteen of Ska’s distribution states through colder months. Contact Emily Hutto at coop@radcraftbeer.com with any more questions about this beer’s backstory or availability.

Ska Releases 24th Anniversary Rosé Strong Ale; Celebrating This Weekend With 30+ Brewery Friends

This invitational will feature Ska’s 24th Anniversary Rosé Strong Ale, a Cabernet Sauvignon barrel-aged mixed culture beer made with Açaí fruit and a grape blend.

41603560_1996866437066768_8311661942905241600_o.jpg

WHAT: Ska Brewing’s sold-out 24th anniversary invitational will feature a triple threat of punk and ska bands— Mustard Plug, The Toasters,  and The Aggrolites— as well as samples poured by more than 30 of their craft brewery friends within the region.

Kicking off the celebration is Mustard Plug, a 22-year-old punk-influenced Ska band from the midwest that most recently debuted their new album Can’t Contain It. Next up is The Toasters, who will return to Durango for the third time. This OG ska band from NYC circa 1981 played their time-honored classics from albums like Skaboom and Thrill Me Up at Ska’s 16th and 21st anniversary celebrations. Then to perform are The Aggrolites, a compilation of two bands, one reggae and one ska in genre, that came together in Los Angeles in 2002 to create the soul and funk-inspired “dirty reggae music” that they’re known for.

This invitational will feature Ska’s 24th Anniversary Rosé Strong Ale, a Cabernet Sauvignon barrel-aged mixed culture beer made with Açaí fruit and a grape blend. It pours a hazy dark purple color with a light white head. Intense açaí and sweet ripe raspberry aromas fill the nose. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes create a bittersweet, herbal, wine-like powerhouse. A drinkable brew with a crisp, refreshing mouthfeel and a slightly dry, mildly bitter finish. Find this beer on tap at Ska’s 24th anniversary party and for sale to-go in 500mL bottles at Ska’s World Headquarters while supplies last.

Guests at this event can enjoy beer pours from more than 30 breweries (the complete list is on the next page), as well as samples of Ska’s new canned, non-alcoholic bubbly water, Skagua

WHEN: Bands to perform and breweries to pour on Saturday, September 7 from 4 to 9pm, and the brewery is not otherwise open to the public during that time.

WHERE: This celebration of Ska’s 24 years in business will go down at the brewery World Headquarters in Durango, Colorado located at 225 Girard Street in the “BoDo” neighborhood.

Advice From The Trail: Brooklyn Brewery on Social Media

Brooklyn Brewery’s social media advice for craft breweries.

bel-air-weru-hires-0123.jpg

Brooklyn Brewery have always been pioneers, in the craft beer industry and beyond. What started as a risky endeavor to introduce New Yorkers to the potential of beer and worldly flavors has spawned into the most widely distributed craft brewery in the world.

We reached out to Brooklyn Brewery Social Media Coordinator, Paige Snyder to get her insight into managing a global brand's social media and what other breweries can incorporate into their strategy regardless of their distribution footprint...

A multi-platform approach is the only way to reach as many potential beer drinkers as possible. Each platform comes with its own benefits and challenges, and figuring out how to wield those effectively is a key part of any overall marketing strategy.

Combining the local-level targeting of Facebook with the overarching reach of Twitter and Instagram allows us to keep targeted messaging relevant to specific audiences while using the broader platforms to achieve general branding goals.

Each social media platform demonstrates a very different pattern of consumption. Our main challenge is to figure out the best way to deliver content to be sure we are reaching our audience and not getting lost in the noise. For example, a short, pithy snippet of copy that might cut through the crowd on Twitter might not provide enough information for our audience on Facebook.

It is up to us to consider our message and who we are trying to reach, then translate it into the best form of communication for each platform.

Changing your name on Twitter is the online equivalent of carving jack o’lanterns and hanging skulls in your window for your neighbors to see.

Above all else, be approachable and be kind. At worst, you will divert the sort of customer service disasters that end up as clickbait on media websites. At best, you will be able to provide your audience with a detailed, interesting, and useful interaction on a platform that can often feel completely overwhelming. The people you’re talking to (in most cases) are also beer people. The more we can respect our fellow drinkers and their communities, the more good can be achieved and the more utility will come through for all.

Also, every picture of a beer in a glass needs to have a good head on it.

— Paige Snyder, Social Media Coordinator at Brooklyn Brewery

Thirsty Monk Welcomes New Asheville Lead Brewer, Opens 2x4 Brew Pub and Tasting Room in Gerber Village

New lead brewer, Paul Friedheim will set up shop at Thirsty Monk’s newest concept, 2x4 Brew Pub in Gerber Village

Brian-Paul-Brewday-Crop.jpg

ASHEVILLE, NC— Thirsty Monk proudly welcomes Paul Friedheim, a graduate of Appalachian State Fermentation Sciences Program and former brewer at Devil’s Backbone Brewing, to run their brewing operations in North Carolina.

“I look forward to mastering the already great flagship beers Thirsty Monk has been making for years as well as creating new tasty brews for the people of Asheville to enjoy,” says Paul Friedheim, lead brewer at Thirsty Monk in Asheville.

Friedheim will set up shop at Thirsty Monk’s newest concept, 2x4 Brew Pub in Gerber Village, located off Hendersonville Rd in South Asheville. This taproom pays homage to sister company Compact Cottages, a builder of affordable housing in Western North Carolina. CEO Barry Bialik leads both companies and is also chair of Asheville’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee.

“Our purpose at Compact Cottages is to build homes that Thirsty Monk wage level employees can actually afford in Asheville. If we can’t do that, then something is out of balance,” says Bialik.

For the renowned operator of Thirsty Monk, this location will be the best spot to check out what the North Carolina brewery is working on. The Gerber Village location is open Wednesday through Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. with rotating beers and similar food offerings to its Downtown Asheville counterpart— including expertly-paired food flights, house-made hand pies, pints of candied bacon, pretzels and much more.

“Our new 2x4 Brew Pub is a playful bridge between our beer and house building worlds,” says Bialik. “2x4 Brew Pub has a library of small house design books, affordable housing resources, information about reasonably priced homes in Asheville, and some fun 2x4-themed items to entertain yourself while you are sipping our beers—from Giant Jenga outside to building blocks inside.”

For more information about Thirsty Monk’s newest endeavour 2x4 Brew Pub, contact Chea Franz at chea@radcraftbeer.com.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company Bottles Renowned Queen of Tarts Dark Sour Ale for the First Time

This Great American Beer Festival® gold medal-winner is one of the most anticipated small batch beer releases of the year.

SAN DIEGO, CA— The queen has returned… this time in bottles! Karl Strauss Brewing Company is re-releasing its highly coveted Barrel Aged Queen of Tarts Dark Sour Ale beginning on September 12th for a limited time. It will be available on draft, and for the first time ever it will also be packaged in 500 mL bottles.

“We are really proud to package Queen of Tarts. People have been asking for this for a long time, and we’re thrilled to be able to meet the demand for this fan-favorite sour ale. Don’t wait around, because it’ll go fast!” says Matt Johnson, Brewmaster of Brewery Operations.

Queen of Tarts is one of the most anticipated small batch beer releases of the year for Karl Strauss. This Great American Beer Festival® award winner, which received a gold medal in the American-Style Sour Ale category, is aged on Michigan-grown tart cherries in first generation red wine barrels. Flavors of French oak, tart cherry, and lightly roasted malts are backed by a lively finish.

“Crack open a fresh bottle and you’ll notice a ton of cherry aroma up front, with a slight oaky flavor and a clean, lactic sourness. But these bottles will also cellar really nicely. Expect that cherry flavor to become a little more subdued and the lactic sourness to round out. I am really looking forward to trying this batch of Queen again in a few years!” says Sean Albrecht, Head Brewer.

Queen of Tarts will be available on draft and in 500mL bottles beginning on September 12th for a limited time at Karl Strauss’ Tasting Room and Brewpubs.

For more information on Queen of Tarts, contact Emily Hutto at coop@radcraftbeer.com.

At 6.4 percent ABV, Pumpkin Ale hits all the right notes for pumpkin beer lovers with 23 pounds of real pumpkin added per barrel as well as allspice, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. Pumpkin Brew will be available mid-August.

Coming out of Lone Tree’s Branching Out series of small-batch, specialty beers and hitting cans for the first time, Cranberry Saison is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale that was aged with fresh cranberry puree. Effervescent and slightly tart, this deceivingly drinkable 8.5 percent ABV beer is perfect for sipping, long past the dog days of summer and into autumn at the Thanksgiving table. Cranberry Saison will be available at the end of August.

A classic through and through, Lone Tree’s Pilsner has a bright, golden appearance and finishes with a dry and fruity hop note. At 5.8 percent ABV, German-style Pilsner will also be available at the end of August.

“Vanilla Caramel is a fan favorite that will be available for fall and winter,” says Stack. “You’ll still enjoy this amber as we transition from the warmer weather that can be typical of Colorado but the sweet vanilla notes will provide an inviting comfort for cooler nights ahead.”

Originally developed on John Winter's homebrew system, Vanilla Caramel Amber is a 6 percent ABV gem created with crystal malt and Madagascar vanilla beans. The caramel notes in Vanilla Caramel Amber come from a large amount of Crystal 60 malt in the grain bill— no other caramel or other sugar is added to this beer. The base beer is a traditional American Amber with a good helping of hops to balance out the sweetness of the vanilla. Vanilla Caramel Amber will be available in canned 6-packs and on draft starting on Labor Day.

Lone Tree will be tapping Festbier, a full bodied traditional golden Oktoberfest lager that is crisp and refreshing. This highly drinkable 6.3 percent ABV beer will be available on September 14 in conjunction with Lone Tree’s annual Oktoberfest and Market featuring over 16 local vendors, live polka music and a stein hoisting contest.

Lone Tree Brewing’s fall seasonals will be available on draft and in 6-packs at Lone Tree’s taproom, as well as within the brewery’s distribution footprint.

Bonfire Brewing Continues Community Creator Series with Fall Releases

Look for Gyptoberfest, GrapepHruit, and Sugar Speed in 6 packs of 12 oz. cans soon.

Fall-Can-Release.png

EAGLE, CO— Bonfire Brewing continues their newly introduced Community Creator Series with the planned releases of Gyptoberfest Märzen Lager, GrapepHruit Kettle Sour Grapefruit IPA, and Sugar Speed Caramel Milk Stout. The three beers follow the limited series release of Après-Berry Strawberry Blonde Ale and will be available first at the Bonfire tap room in downtown Eagle, followed by limited availability state-wide as mountain temperatures begin to drop.

Gyptoberfest is brewed annually to help support the town of Gypsum’s Oktoberfest, and has become a local favorite. It’s a traditional Märzen Lager, brewed with German-style Augustiner yeast with a malt forward profile.

GrapepHruit is an American IPA kettle soured with lactobacillus. Generous amounts of Summit, Citra, and Simcoe hops seamlessly intertwine with the juicy Grapefruit puree added near the completion of fermentation.

Sugar Speed is a tasting room favorite originally brewed last fall in honor of the original Bonfire Brew Dog, Sugar. She had one speed, and it was the one that co-founder Andy Jessen walked her at. A little too fast for most, a bit too slow if you took her for a run, but always right there with him.

Sugar Speed is brewed with both caramel malts and roasted barley providing a smooth toffee flavor with a moderate amount of roast to balance the milk stout sweetness of the lactose (milk sugar) added to the boil. A kiss of caramel, vanilla and sea salt are added during secondary fermentation to lend a caramel sweetness on the palate with a slight salt aftertaste.

Fueled by the inspiration of their community and the power of an automated labeler, Bonfire began brewing, packaging and distributing a line of limited-release beers as part of their new Community Creator Series. The series began earlier this year with the releases of Après-Cot Apricot Blonde Ale, Pink-I Raspberry IPA, and Après-Berry Strawberry Blonde Ale.

Following Gyptoberfest, GrapepHruit, and Sugar Speed, Bonfire plans to continue the series with more interesting one-offs, local favorites and perhaps the resurrection of previously discontinued beers.

In addition to the Community Creator Series, Bonfire plans to release the very popular Rope Drop Hazy IPA for its second year with availability in cans and on draft throughout the fall and winter.

Look for Gyptoberfest, GrapepHruit, and Sugar Speed in 6 packs of 12 oz. cans at Bonfire’s tasting room and select local accounts soon, with limited statewide shipments throughout the Fall.

Ska Brewing Brings Back World-Class Oktoberfest

It’s hard to top the first year of Ska Brewing’s Oktoberfest, with wins at prestigious beer competitions across the globe.

DURANGO, CO— It’s hard to top the first year of Ska Brewing’s Oktoberfest, with wins at prestigious beer competitions across the globe. Nevertheless cans of this world-class German-Style Lager return to Ska’s World Headquarters for the season on Friday, August 2.

Ska brewed and canned a small batch of this craft lager for the first time in 2018, and it sold out in record time— well before Oktoberfest season was over. That first batch was honored with gold at the European Beer Star in the Vienna-Style Lager Category, silver at the Stockholm Beer & Whiskey Festival, and a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival® in the Vienna-Style Lager category. “It’s an honor to receive these international recognitions as they’re a testament to the all-German ingredients we use, and the care that we take for our lagers,” says Ska Brewing Sales & Marketing Director Kristen Muraro.

Ska Oktoberfest is crafted with 100 percent German-sourced Munich and Vienna malts that impart nutty, bready, toasty flavors, all balanced by Noble hops. It finishes clean and crisp.

This year Ska brewed just a bit more Oktoberfest, hoping that the unfortunate souls who didn’t get to try it last year might have more luck this time around. Oktoberfest will tap at Ska’s World Headquarters on Friday, August 2 at 5pm. The Container Restaurant will serve house-made Bavarian style soft pretzels with beer mustard, and pints of the beer will cost $4. Oktoberfest will be available in canned 6-packs across Ska’s distribution footprint while supplies last.

For more information about the return of Ska’s Oktoberfest, contact Emily Hutto at coop@radcraftbeer.com.

Karl Strauss and Russian River Debut Collaboration Beer: New California IPA

This modern India Pale Ale is the first collaboration between these storied institutions of California craft beer.

DSC01426.JPG

SAN DIEGO, CA— California brewery icons Russian River Brewing Company and Karl Strauss Brewing Company proudly introduce their collaboration beer, New California IPA. This modern India Pale Ale is the first collaboration between these storied institutions of California craft beer.

Santa Rosa’s Russian River and San Diego’s Karl Strauss set out to brew a beer that pays homage to craft beer’s most adored beer style, the India Pale Ale. The two breweries used their collective knowledge gained over the past 30+ years in the craft brewing industry to brew a new, refined IPA. Some India Pale Ales are extremely bitter, while others overly focus on aroma and flavor with no bite, but New California IPA strikes that “Goldilocks” balance between the two.

This beer focuses on each critical stage of hop addition: bittering, flavor, aroma, and dry-hopping. The star of this India Pale Ale is a rather new cultivar: the Pahto hop. It is a high-alpha hop that lends a palatable bitterness throughout the beer, while an all-star lineup of Strata, Ekuanot, Amarillo, and Idaho 7 hops deliver wildly diverse layers of flavors, from bright citrus to tropical fruit to resinous pine.

New California IPA will be available on draft and in 16oz can 4-packs beginning on August 1st (which is not-so-coincidentally IPA Day!) This IPA can be enjoyed at Karl Strauss’ Tasting Room, Brewpubs, and at craft accounts throughout California.

For more information on New California IPA, contact Emily Hutto at coop@radcraftbeer.com.

Laws Whiskey House Makes Waves with Release of 6-Year Bottled in Bond Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey on July 28

This whiskey was aged for six years, exceeding the minimum four-year standards of the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897

Laws_6-year-BIB_lightbox_sm.jpg

DENVER, CO— Laws Whiskey House is releasing a 6-Year Bottled in Bond Four Grain Bourbon expression of its award-winning Four Grain Bourbon. Bottles will be available at the distillery on July 28; participating Colorado retailers will receive bottles in August, while supplies last.

This whiskey was aged for six years, exceeding the minimum four-year standards of the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897. The 6-year bonded Four Grain Bourbon will replace Laws Whiskey’s 4-year version, which has been a popular staple in the Laws portfolio for several years.

“The 4-year bonded Four Grain Bourbon has been a personal favorite of mine, but with the release of the 6-year expression, we’re raising the bar and shifting the bonded Four Grain to an older profile,” says Al Laws, founder of Laws Whiskey House. “This version produces smoother vanilla and caramel notes and an enhanced black cherry flavor that you don’t get from the 4-year version.”

Featuring 100% Colorado-grown corn from The Whiskey Sisters in Burlington, and rye, wheat and barley from Colorado Malting Company in Alamosa, the 6-Year Bottled in Bond Four Grain Bourbon matured in 53-gallon charred oak barrels.

A Bottled in Bond designation requires that the whiskey be a product of a single season, using the grain of a single season, made by one distiller at a single distillery, and aged at least four years in a federal government-bonded warehouse. This whiskey is then cut and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). By making bonded whiskeys, Laws continues to uphold the highest integrity in the whiskey-making process.

The 6-Year Bottled in Bond Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey joins Laws Whiskey’s lineup of bonded products, including the newly released Bonded Centennial Straight Wheat Whiskey, bonded Secale Straight Rye Whiskey, bonded Two Grain Straight Bourbon and bonded Straight Corn Whiskey.

“Everyone at Laws is excited to present the new 6-year bonded bourbon with our friends, fans and extended village,” says Laws. “We continue to challenge ourselves to raise the bar on Colorado Whiskey as we improve and refine our craft.”

“Two years young and we have barely unfolded our creative potential…”

BREWPROJ-BREW8618.jpg

“I have been floored by the amount of interest and willingness of Fort Collins beer drinkers to explore the wealth of beer dimensions that we can still create,” says Peter Bouckaert, co-owner at Purpose Brewing. “It’s not lost on me that they expect a lot out of us, which is why we’ve continued to push the boundaries of beer making.”

Live music will be provided by the eclectic, groovy tunes of JangleTHUMP on Saturday and the lyrical musings of CSU alum Nina Forsyth on Sunday. All weekend long, enjoy some of your favorite childhood games in oversized form including, Jenga, Bananagrams, Cup-Stack, Ring Toss and more. To celebrate two wonderful years in business, Purpose will be releasing brand new beers and some familiar favorites including their famed taco beer. Z Catering will provide a delicious menu for the weekend with food items that pair perfectly with the beer lineup for the weekend.

The midtown brewery, led by Frezi and Peter Bouckaert, former New Belgium Brewing brewmaster and storied sour beer maker, opened during the summer of 2017. Since then, the small but mighty brewery welcomed brewer Mike Hiatt, and has continued to elevate consumers’ palates near and far. From mushroom beers to barley wines, the brewery releases unique, rotating beers as well as an inspired Smoeltrekker sour every week. Smoeltrekker, which means “pulling a funny face” in Flemish is the brewery owners cheeky way of naming their sour beer program. Every sour is aptly named Smoeltrekker along with the barrel number in which the delicious liquid is housed.

“Two years young and we have barely unfolded our creative potential,” said Bouckaert. “We have so many barrels behind our bar that are just waiting to share their story and put Fort Collins on the map for outstanding sour beers.”

ABOUT SAISON

Belgian-Style Ale, 6.8%
With a recipe born from backyard test batches, the Saison that sits before you today is a GABF gold-medal winning beer. Heavily reliant on flavors and aromas generated by our house yeast, this beer exemplifies the care we take in every aspect of Funwkerks’ brewing process. Go ahead and delight in the Saison’s beautiful orange hue and bright effervescence. Notes of passion fruit, tangerine, and spices. Pairs well with high fives.

ABOUT TROPIC KING

Imperial Saison, 8.0% ABV
Originally designed to be a hoppier version of the brewery’s flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced the hop creating this very unique Imperial Saison. Notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, ginger and pepper. Pairs well with hula hooping.

ABOUT WHITE

Belgian-Style Wheat Ale with Spices, 4.8%
Rooted in Belgian tradition, this refreshing wheat ale, or witbier, is our interpretation of a classic style. Its hazy pale color and creamy white head result from the ample amounts of wheat used in the recipe. The addition of raw oats contributes to a smooth mouthfeel while the Belgian yeast imparts a complex yet dry finish. Notes of orange zest and lemon with hints of spice. Pairs well with secret handshakes.

ABOUT RASPBERRY PROVINCIAL

Sour Ale Brewed with Raspberries, 4.2%
This delicious creation was truly a product of creativity, ingenuity, and luck. In the summer of 2013 Funkwerks took a test batch of their sessionable sour summer ale, Provincial, that didn’t quite hit gravity and decided to have some fun with it by adding a heavy dose of raspberries. The end result was so delicious, they ended up brewing it year-round. This delightfully tart fruit beer is refreshing, with a citrusy berry aroma which transitions to a subtly sweet and tart finish. Notes of lemon zest and tart raspberries.

ABOUT PINEAPPLE PROVINCIAL

Sour Ale Brewed with Pineapple, 4.2%
Pineapple Provincial is a tart, light-bodied, tropical beer with notes of lemon zest and pineapple that give the apricot and raspberry variants of the Provincial series a run for their money.

ABOUT RHUBERRY PROVINCIAL

Sour Ale Brewed with Strawberry and Rhubarb, 4.2%
Combines freshly picked rhubarb with bright, juicy strawberries to create a tart, fruity, and sessionable sour ale with rhubarb and strawberry. This beer is the pie-fect libation for any season. One sip and you’ll be transported back in time to your grandma’s porch swing while aromas of cooling pie waft around you in the warm breeze. Notes of ripe strawberries and tart rhubarb. Pairs well with cheek pinches.

ABOUT SAISON d’BRETT

Foudre-Aged Saison Ale with Brett, 7.6%
This crisp, dry, saison was aged for six months in Funkwerks’ 800-gallon oak foudre. The fruity aromas and spice flavors are derived from the brettanomyces and wild yeast previously inoculated inside the foudre. Warming flavors of ripened fruit and funky brett contribute to this beer’s bright complexity. Notes of fresh pineapple, tropical fruit, and wet hay.

Funkwerks’ beer is now available in select locations across Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Minnesota, Missouri, California, Nevada, Ohio, Kentucky, Chicago, New York City, New Jersey, and now Kansas.
