Animal shelters are seeing a massive uptick in the number of adoptions and fosters. The American Humane Society reported a “national dog shortage” from the uptick in animal adoptions since the pandemic started and Chicago Animal Care and Control shared that for the first time, they have no dogs currently available for adoption. The Welland Tribune reported that an animal shelter helped Nigerian families feed their pets in the midst of the Coronavirus crisis. How heartwarming is that?
Adopting isn’t the only way that you can help these animals during the pandemic. Dumb Friends League is a Colorado-based shelter founded in 1910 that is one of the largest community-based animal welfare organizations in the Rocky Mountain Region. In light of the pandemic, they’ve shared some supplies individuals can donate to them, whether directly or via their Amazon wishlist. They’ve also relied on the continued support of online donations as well. Be sure to connect with your local shelter and see if they have those options available as well!
A lot of craft breweries support local shelters with pet adoptions, including Fargo Brewing Company in North Dakota who teamed up with 4 Luv of Dog Rescue to place photos of adoptable dogs on their cans to raise awareness that these pups needed a forever home. Streetside Brewery, similarly, teamed up with Ohio Alleycat Rescue and Save the Animals Foundation to release “Who’s a Good Beer?” featuring adoptable pets from each of the shelters, as did The Colony Meadery out in Pennsylvania.
To further encourage adoptions and finding fur-ever homes for animals, the ASPCA is launching a National Adoption Weekend campaign from June 5 - 7 to encourage virtual animal adoptions during the COVID-19 crisis.
As the country slowly begins to reopen, transition into a “safer at home” stage, and adapt to the usage of more virtual tools, The Verge shares some ways you can adopt your next pet safely and virtually. After all, health and safety do come first in this transitional period.
